Rainy days can bring vacation plans to a halt if you’re unprepared. Although Hilton Head is known for its sunny days, beautiful beaches, and nature preserves, we have the occasional summer storm. Luckily, there are plenty of indoor activities for you and your family to enjoy. Don’t let the weather stop you from discovering all the island has to offer. Here are five fun ways to spend a rainy day.
Learn about the region’s history, culture, and landscape at the Coastal Discovery Museum. Take a closer look at Lowcountry wildlife in the Discovery Lab, engage with cultural heritage stories, and let your little ones’ imaginations run wild in the Kids’ Zone. The museum hosts between six and eight temporary exhibits throughout the year, so there’s always something new to explore.
If the weather allows, take a stroll around the museum’s 68 acre Honey Horn property. A mile-long seashell nature trail will take you past some of the oldest structures on Hilton Head, and connects to three educational boardwalks which extend into Jarvis Creek. Don’t forget to drop by the region’s only native butterfly enclosure and the museum’s replica of the Native American Shell Ring.
The museum is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., and on Sunday from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Admission is free for all ages.
Cosmopolitan Magazine named Park Plaza Cinema “the coolest movie theater in South Carolina” for a reason. Relax in one of the theater’s luxury reclining seats while you watch one of the latest films. The independently-owned theater features an array of gourmet meals…well beyond Twizzlers, as well as a wine and beer list. Guaranteed to be a unique movie experience.
Remember to look for the owner’s dog, Antionette, who is a regular fixture at the theater, usually dressed in her latest frock and wanting a pat. You can take your own furry friend to the movies, too, provided they weigh no more than 20 lbs, are on a leash and stay with you at all times.
Every exhibit in The Sandbox is interactive, creating endless opportunities for creativity and constructive play. Let your child lead the way through the Rhythm and Hues art room, the Learner’s Loft, an “International Bazaar,” and more. Charlie’s Perfect Playplace is a room designed specially for infants and toddlers, making this museum appropriate for kids of all ages.
The Sandbox hosts a variety of family-friendly events each month. Imagination Hour features storytime and special crafts every Thursday from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Roll up your sleeves and complete a science project at Awe-STEM Saturdays on select dates.

Fitness Classes
Vacation can be exhausting, which is why a rainy day is the perfect excuse to take a rejuvenating yoga class. Hilton Head is home to several yoga studios, including Island Yoga, Jiva Yoga Center and Bikram Hot Yoga. Get in a work out during a warm practice or take a break through a relaxing slow-flow.
Looking to try something a little different? Register for a class at Pilates Hilton Head. Exercise can cause a rush of mood-boosting hormones called endorphins, even on a rainy day, leaving you refreshed and revived afterwards.
